Welcome to the new Tribes Alive website.

This website begins a new phase in the development of Tribes Alive, the public face of Indigenous People’s Cultural support Trust. Up-to-the-minute information on our home page and a host of accessible articles about tribal indigenous people make this site perfect for anyone concerned about the plight of indigenous people and the Amazon rainforest ecosystems where they live.

Apart from our own material, we have included a host of carefully-selected links which take you to additional resources on the internet. We try to ensure these links work and we would be very grateful for an email from you if you find any which are broken.

Fundraising for Rio+20

Rio+20 Logo

Today we launch a fundraising campaign. Rio+20 (see separate post) is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring together a large group of indigenous people where they can be seen and heard by the world’s leaders and media.

But travel in South America is costly; the distances are long and the availability of transport is restricted, roads are often in poor condition and surface travel is precarious and time-consuming.

Plans are steaming ahead for the Indians’ presence at this world-class event. The infrastructure in Rio – four large oca houses with sanitary and cooking facilities, etc – is being created, and 1,300 indigenous people will be there – enough to ensure that their voice is heard this time.

But each group is responsible for finding the cost of transport from their villages to Rio, and this is where we come in. Our fundraising is targeted at helping as many indigenous groups as possible. Please put your hand in your pocket and dig deep. If everyone on our mailing list gave just £10 we’d be able to help five villages to attend – five villages whose voices will not be heard unless we help them.

“I want to give £10”

Click the Just Giving logo to go to our Rio+20 dedicated fundraising page – it doesn’t have to be £10, you can donate any amount:

Go to the Rio+20 Fundraising page

You can also make a donation by text – just text RIOJ20 followed by the amount you want to donate, for example to donate £10 text “RIOJ20 £10”, to 70070. You can donate £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 in a single text message.

Just Text Giving

This is very cost-effective. All the money you donate goes to Tribes Alive, and your network provider does not charge you for the SMS you send to make the donation.

Your donation will be used wisely, for the benefit of Brazil’s indigenous people and for the benefit of us all, because it will help them to maintain the rainforest and strengthen the climate regulating and carbon storage services it provides for the world.
